What is OGP?
The Open Government Partnership (OGP) is a multilateral initiative, formally launched on September 2011 by the Heads of State and Government of eight countries (South Africa, Brazil, United States of America, Philippines, Indonesia, Mexico, Norway and United Kingdom), that aims to secure concrete commitments from governments to promote transparency, empower citizens, fight corruption, and harness new technologies to strengthen participatory democracy.
The OGP intends that governments become more transparent, accountable and closer to citizens to provide better public services, which in many cases will require a cultural change that will ensure greater dialogue and collaboration between governments and civil society.
To become a member of the OGP, countries must:
- Subscribe the Open Administration Declaration;
- Present an Action Plan for Open Administration, to be developed through public consultation;
- Disseminate progress reports on the implementation of the Plan.
